    Another terrific video! I love the texture dry brush creates. Thanks so much for posting Marc! Have you ever tried the Noodlers Ahab Pen Brush? It's the larger of the two Noodlers Pen Brushes and is apparently designed for dry brush technique. Thank you Sharon! I haven’t tried the Noodler’s brush pens. The brush tips on them don’t look like they come to a sharp point, a deal breaker in my opinion. I’m using a number of different sable brushes in this video, some of them I bought in Russia years ago, some made by Escoda, and some of unknown provenance. Sable brushes really work best for this, but they don’t have to be of the highest quality.

    "Authoritarian" pen? A better adjective might be "helpful". Or "pleasantly different from the shape of all your other pens" for people who write every day for long periods and could use a change of pace. Nothing against Pilot, but I think the Safari is a great pen. Along with my Sailor, Franklin Christoph (2), Aurora, Omas, Pelikan, and Kaweco.

      You might enjoy living in a benevolent dictatorship if you find the Safari “helpful.” :) Jokes aside, perhaps those who only write with this pen might enjoy the coercive grip. But for many artists (the intended audience here) or anyone that shifts their grip often, this feature is a nuisance.

    I have a both pens and I agree that the Platinum is a diva. I've found that by taking the nib out, (Yes it was pretty tight but it came out with some force) and hacking the feed slightly it will create better flow. I created a very small channel directly underneath the nib like most feeds have which the platinum does not.I just used a razor blade. Just a few swipes. It works great with most inks I've tried so far. Not too wet either! It has trouble keeping up with long flexed lines but for fast hatching it doesn't skip at all. Thanks for the video Marc!

    0:33 I'd say the main reason I want line width variation via nib flex is: it's the way the most elegant cursive ever seen on the planet was created, in the eras of the quill, and subsequently the steel dip pen, introduced ca 1850 by Joseph Gillot. Good cursive disappeared due to the explosion of the fountain pen from ca 1890--modern manufacturers have let us down tremendously. Appreciated the great info in your welcome review :-)

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan 15 дней назад

      I think the decline is more due to the increased focus in our educational system on training factory workers, and other roles not requiring fancy writing skills. My mother’s elementary school notebooks where filled with calligraphy practice. I believe only two years were dedicated to cursive writing when I was going to school. My son is going into third grade, and still writes in block letters.

    • @Michael.Chapman
      @Michael.Chapman 14 дней назад

      @@mkompan similar here at school in Australia. When I grew up in the 1960s we were taught ‘modified cursive’ but in 1970s high school, all penmanship focus disappeared, everyone competed to develop the most affected, unique (vulgar non-traditional) ‘what-ever-you-want’ styles. My Mum was a school teacher-she wrote carefully executed cursive her whole life. Dad was a draughtsman/ engineer so wrote an amazing, very neat map-style hand-printing.

    I've gotten FPR Ultra Flex nibs (#6 steel duo tone) to work in an Asvine pen from Amazon. Unfortunately the Asvine pens come with plastic feeds that I need to modify by cutting a deeper channel for increased ink flow. Asvine sells replacement nib+feed units on Amazon so I purchased a couple of spare. I've ordered Ebonite feeds from FPR and waiting for them to come, to see if I can mod an Ebonite feed to fit into the Asvine. I am using the Asvine V200. I also have a Magna Carta Mag 600, I want to keep the original plastic/Ebonite body of the Magna Carta in pristine condition so I took out the nib and put it in another Asvine V200, also with a modified plastic feed. I had flow problems with the Magna Carta Mag 600 nib in the original body even after heat setting the Ebonite feed, and wasn't happy with the ink capacity of the included converter, so now the original parts aside from the nib are in their box. Hello! I didnt know you could fit a fude nib to a TWSBI 580!! May i know how you did that? Did you disassemble your TWSBI 580 and bought a separate fude nib only? Im super new to fountain inks but didnt think at all this was possible!

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan 21 день назад

      @@JeanaTheGreat welcome to the wonderful world of fountain pens! The 580 uses a standard sized #5 nib, and the nib and feed pull right out, so you can easily do nib swaps. You can buy #5 fude nibs on Amazon (make sure they’re #5, and not #6), and make the switch.

    • @JeanaTheGreat
      @JeanaTheGreat 20 дней назад

      @@mkompan omygoshh okay thanks for this information! Can you only do this on the Twsbi 580? I bought an Twsbi eco (but havent used it yet) and was wondering if you could disassemble that as well?

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan 20 дней назад

      @@JeanaTheGreat the eco uses a non-standard sized nib, that’s harder to replace. You can put a #5 Into it, but it will be loose. That can be remedied by placing a a few strips of clear tape on the back of the nib to tighten the fit.

    Marvelous. I used a chamois in a drawing class but didn't learn the proper way of using it -- I didn't know it was supposed to become coated in charcoal and stay that way. Also didn't know about the cornstarch layer. Definitely giving this a try. Thank you.

    1. I love watching other people doing charcoal drawing. 2. That's a beautiful, classic technique. 3. Charcoal is also fabulous for more expressionistic, line-based techniques, as it makes such bold, dramatic lines. 4. What is vine charcoal good for? Besides not being actually black and breaking constantly?

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan 22 дня назад

      1. Thanks for your comment, as always. 2. Charcoal can be used in so many ways. I’ve even seen people make drawing ink out of it. 3. Vine charcoal isn’t for me, but I have seen it used effectively for very expressive gesture drawings.

    Have you ever used De Atramentis Document Ink Black or brown or white on thinner smoother paper? What is the line quality (feathering, ink drying time for marks (eg does it take long to dry and will it blend together if cross hatched quickly?)) when being used with watercolor paper rough, smooth or smoother paper such as Rhodia G especially with a pointed nib such as a Nikko G or a Gillot 404.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan 23 дня назад

      I’ve used both the black and brown on a large variety of artist papers and it consistently works very well, drying quickly, without feathering or strike through. I can’t speak for Rhodia paper since I’ve never used it.
